Description

This Nursing Institute of Healthcare Design workshop empowers diverse members of the healthcare design team to explore the prismatic spectrum of research and evidence-informed/evidence-based design through creating a culture of inquiry, fostering critical appraisal skills, and promoting translation to project scope. Key research considerations and tips, benefitting novice and experienced attendees alike, will be shared by a wide array of subject matter experts through collaborative activities, networking, and a digital toolkit.

• Re-think: How do we identify problems or ideas to explore?
• Appraise: Where can I find reputable information and how do I read it?
• Inquire: Who do I include when I am searching for and appraising evidence?
• Study: What are things I need to consider when I am looking to conduct research with or without people as participants?
• Empower: What are the next steps to help others learn what I have found out?

Learning Objectives

• Objective 1a. Attendees will describe how to formulate questions that are informed by observations, trends,
or patterns in healthcare delivery or system design.
• Objective 1b. Attendees will describe the steps in appraising sources of information, including identifying
reputable sources, used to support evidence-based/evidence-informed healthcare facility design.
• Objective 2. Attendees will compare and contrast the different types of research used to address questions
and identification of key elements of reading research-based reports and articles.
• Objective 3a. Attendees will distinguish key elements necessary to consider when including research in the
healthcare design project, such as: including people as participants, linking measurements to outcomes, and
resources necessary to carry out the research.
• Objective 3b. Attendees will list ways to disseminate, or share, the findings of their research within the scope
of the project as well as the healthcare design community at-large.
• Objective 4. Attendees will illustrate through group activities and panel discussion the importance of
collaboration among nurses and members of the design team when supporting or conducting research-related
activities.
