Description
This in-depth, interactive mental health mock-up workshop invites participants to design psychiatric inpatient environments with modular methods. Beginning with an overview by Stantec’s team of mental health design experts on dignity-driven, trauma-informed, integrated design trends in behavioral health, the session will include a discussion of non-traditional design process tools such as full-scale mock-ups, virtual reality (VR), and 3-D printing/models.
Utilizing a care team desk and inpatient room as the proposed design elements, attendees will break into teams to explore concepts with a full-scale mock-up. Participants will work with this life-size design tool, develop psych-safe environments, and evaluate how the mock-up affected their approach, space programming development, and decision-making process (especially regarding safety, room configuration, furniture selection, patient autonomy and dignity, etc.).
Attendees will then regroup to review the experience of prototyping these spaces and lessons learned from exploring behavioral health environments with this non-traditional design tool. The teams will report their experience and discuss the pros and cons they found using the mental health mock-up in a rapid-fire, round robin-style review. At the conclusion of the session, attendees will review case studies of how these tools were applied in past and current projects.
Learning Objectives
• Learn about and evaluate multiple design tools that enhance the design process.
• Discuss and review trends in mental health design.
• Analyze what is required to plan for and implement a full-scale mockup.
• Synthesize the pros and cons of each mock-up iteration and its implication for design.
