Description

In 2021, the Surgeon General issued an advisory on youth mental health and since then, the need for pediatric services in this area has been rapidly increasing and has become a “second pandemic” during COVID-19. Healthcare systems are making new investments in expanded services for the full continuum of care. This presentation will discuss the unique challenges in designing for pediatric mental health treatment. This will include the unique design challenges, but also the role of operations in informing design and program decisions. It is critical that new facilities be designed to be clinically effective and financially viable and doing this requires connection between operational planning and design.

Tracks:

Learning Objectives

• Explore the pediatric patient experience and complexities of mental illness in young people and that requires design of alternative treatment settings. .
• Understand unique diagnoses and behaviors that are prevalent in pediatric mental health and how, while grounded in the overarching human needs, they require different design solutions than designing for adults.
• Understand the role of operational planning on the design process.
• Demonstrate the unique financial implications of behavioral health design.
