Description

Interested in space syntax and hospital design? Come to this presentation of the first comprehensive and approachable book that applies space syntax theory and methods to hospital design. This session will be led by two of the authors of a just-released edited volume, “The Covert Life of Hospital Architecture.” The broad perspective—patient bed, inpatient unit, and hospital corridor–will provide attendees with easily applicable theoretical concepts, research findings, and captivating graphics to inform their own practice. Attendees will be given a QR code during the session to download the open-access book for free. Come with your own space syntax questions in hand for discussion during Q&A.

Tracks:

Learning Objectives

• Identify floor plan layout properties that affect ICU mortality.
• Discuss a syntax-based perspective on the impact of architectural design on hospital operations.
• Gauge design strategies that more fully account for the knowledge work dimensions of nursing.
• Call on rules-of-thumb for wayfinding design of corridor systems.
