Description

A rapid shift in healthcare is occurring with the growth of ambulatory care facilities. Ambulatory care is cost effective for systems and design can be tailored for accessibility across the continuum of patient needs, including some advanced services. Recent survey research with 700+ respondents at Goshen Health hospital-based and remote ambulatory care facilities addressed topics including space adequacy, privacy, safety, technology, and facilities’ ability to flex in response to operational changes necessitated by the pandemic. Produced findings inform functional, operational and space criteria for ambulatory care facilities, and suggested several strategies for integrating technology into design and operations, all relevant to future ambulatory design.

Tracks:

Learning Objectives

• Interpret the results and present implications of an empirical study of a Midwestern health system, including ambulatory care facilities offering a variety of services.
• Discuss the major findings as they relate to the services offered and the patients served.
• Contemplate the major findings as they relate to the design for workplace, wellness and safety needs of clinicians and other staff.
• Apply lessons learned from a health system to inform effective functional, operational and space planning.
