Description

Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago spans two city blocks. Transformation of the ambulatory pavilion into an inpatient tower began in 2007. SmithGroup is executing the next phase. Team members engaged in the high-rise’s initial transformation allowed SmithGroup to connect with the buildings’ legacy while performing POEs. The team benchmarked bed towers across the country and leveraged results to convert square-shaped clinics into inpatient floors, while planning for flexibility to support an undefined patient population. This session highlights the problem definition, planning, and design phases. Presenters will also share lessons learned from delivering a project during a global pandemic.

Tracks:

Learning Objectives

• Transform an existing outpatient clinic floor plate with atypical square footage ratios plus vertical transportation, structural, and MEP restraints into an acuity-adaptable inpatient care unit with special emphasis on reducing travel distances.
• Efficiently collect and analyze generations of post-occupancy evaluations for use as a data point before user group meetings convene.
• Analyze and leverage research, POEs, and benchmarking data for functional and operational planning and design comparisons.
• Determine what communication methods foster quick decision-making including 3-D simulations, virtual reality, and operational scenarios.
