Description

More and more mental health patients are presenting with comorbid medical conditions, yet most built environments are not prepared to service both conditions simultaneously. Planning for comorbidity requires more attention to details, more in-depth knowledge of multiple medical conditions, and more time to understand patient and staff needs. In this session, presenters will use data from existing facilities to gain insight into and apply their findings to building a prototype that will benefit all patient populations (pediatric, geriatric; not just psychiatric). Looking at it through an equity lens of “can this encourage less stigmatization?”, can we create environments that flex for safety and security?

Learning Objectives

• Review the safety needs of the comorbid mental health patients and staff.
• Describe how the social, psychological, and physical needs of this patient type impact design.
• Understand how to optimize operations through design and understand integrated care.
• Examine how to achieve cost-savings through flexible design.
