Description

When Sheltering Arms Institute and VCU Health began planning their new destination rehabilitation hospital, their aspiration was predicated on the foundation of academic medicine and cutting-edge research. Fueling exceptional clinical care, the new facility supports an innovative, transdisciplinary model for inpatient rehabilitation. The new institute was planned and designed to be a destination for comprehensive spinal cord injury, stroke, and traumatic brain injury care. Sheltering Arms Institute’s CEO and the design team will delve into their research findings on patient experience outcomes, patient and family perspectives, lessons learned from operationalizing during COVID-19, and how the design supports new rehabilitation strategies.

Learning Objectives

• See how a cohesive vision, design evidence and best practices, and building and care innovations converged in designing a new specialty rehabilitation institute.
• Apply the latest approaches and innovations in rehabilitative care and facility design to your own projects.
• Articulate the impacts that focused design strategies have had on patient satisfaction and healing, and staff recruitment and engagement outcomes.
• Identify and consider opportunities to assess patient and staff impacts of your projects.
