Description

There is a need in the design research field for consistent and valid measures for constructs connecting the built environment to desirable outcomes. With support of a grant from the Academy of Architecture for Health Foundation, this study refined and validated a survey instrument to measure nurses’ ability to work efficiently and effectively in their environment, based aspects related to caring for patients in inpatient units. An important link between the built environment, staff experience, and high-quality patient care is operationalized in this new validated survey scale, developed through a four-phase process using psychometric testing, statistical, and qualitative methods.

Tracks:

Learning Objectives

• Understand the value and use of valid quantitative measures related to the built environment.
• Become informed about survey instruments to measure nurse practice affordance.
• Articulate methods for survey scale development, testing, and validation.
• Identify opportunities to apply the CARE scale in design research studies.
