Description

The Designing Dementia Capable Environments course offers a two-fold look at memory care design. The first part of the course will introduce you to the stages of dementia and common aging changes for a better understanding of the population for which you are designing. This enables you to create environmental supports that maximize the person’s remaining abilities.

The second part of the course is applying what you learned in a design lab. You’ll be given an elder profile to design for, using all the principles learned earlier in the day. These principles align with the SAGE Principles Related to Gerontological Environments.

Track(s)

Learning Objectives

1. Identify empowering paradigm shifts to create successful outcomes for those with dementia.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their impact on function within the built environment.
3. Describe the best ability to function and key remaining abilities for each dementia stage, as defined by Allen Cognitive Levels.
4. Identify important design elements that support the remaining abilities of persons in all stages of dementia.
5. Demonstrate how to incorporate key design principles into structural designs and soft furnishings.
